Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Honolulu HI
336 AM HST Tue Apr 8 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Breezy trade winds will persist through the week, with clouds and
showers favoring windward and mauka areas overnight and during
the morning hours. A band of moisture associated with a remnant
front that has drifted over the islands, along with a developing
upper-level trough later in the week, will lead to periods of
enhanced windward showers.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
Short-term guidance remains in good agreement, indicating a
weakness forming in the surface ridge as a cold front passes well
north of the islands later today through tonight. This will lead
to the pressure gradient relaxing slightly, causing breezy
easterly trade winds to ease into the moderate to locally breezy
range and shift out of the northeast today. Shower coverage has
increased overnight due to a shallow band of moisture that has
moved into the area, which will linger over the next few days.
Given the shallow nature of this boundary, rainfall totals should
mostly remain light, with little reaching leeward areas,
especially as trades weaken.
Wednesday through the end of the week, guidance shows the surface
ridge re-strengthening as a 1035 mb high builds to the north.
This will lead to the return of breezy northeast trade winds
across most of the state, particularly over the western end, where
the remnant boundary may continue to linger. Windward areas can
expect periodic showers, driven by this lingering shallow moisture
and an evolving broad upper trough over the region.
&&
.AVIATION...
Trades have weakened slightly overnight down to moderate to
locally breezy. Thus, AIRMET Tango has been cancelled. Moisture
from a remnant front that has settled southward over the islands
will continue to generate clouds and showers along mainly windward
and mauka areas of Maui County and the Big Island. Isolated
pockets of MVFR ceilings and visibility can be expected.
Otherwise, VFR prevails for leeward locations.
AIRMET Sierra for mountain obscuration has been issued above 2000
ft for north through east sections of Maui, Molokai, and the Big
Island due to clouds and showers.
&&
.MARINE...
The high pressure ridge north of the islands will briefly weaken
today, then strengthen by Wednesday afternoon. Trade winds will
weaken slightly in response during this time period, before
returning to fresh to locally strong levels by Wednesday night.
Small Craft Advisory (SCA) conditions have fallen and will remain
just below advisory thresholds into Wednesday. Therefore the SCA
was cancelled for Hawaiian waters this morning. The marine weather
statement for north facing harbors was also allowed to expire as
the northerly swell declines through the day.
The current large north swell will continue to decline through
Wednesday with surf heights falling just below advisory thresholds
this morning. Therefore the High Surf Advisory was cancelled for
all Hawaiian Islands this morning. A small medium period swell
may slightly boost north and west shore surf late Thursday into
Friday, with small surf heights expected for next weekend.
The current long period south swell will peak today near or
slightly above the summer average heights. This swell will trend
lower on Wednesday and surf will then return to small background
levels from Friday into the weekend.
